LINCOLN LIVES ON

Soon after Abrahan Lincoln's assassination in 1865, White House staff began to report mysterious footsteps in second-floor corridors. More than 80 years later President Harry S. Truman is also said to have heard Lincoln walking about. Relevant sightings have also been reported by other sources, such as account of phantoms of the funeral train that carried the president's body home to springfeild, illinois.
Apperances of Lincoln ghostly figure or a stong preception of his presence have been reported by eminent witnesses. It was first seen , silhouetted in the window of the Oval office, by Grace Coolidge, the wife of President Calvin Coolidge. Poet Carl Sandburg said he had sensed Lincoln standing by him at this window, and Eleanor Roosevelt also sometimes sensed Lincoln's presence.
When Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands stayed in the Lincoln Room at the White House, she supposedly heard a knock on the door , opened it, and saw Lincoln standing in the doorway, in frock coat and top hat. There are also reports that President Ronald Reagan's daughter Maureen saw the ghost in the Lincoln Room.
Mysterious sights and sounds are possibly attributed to Lincoln because of the Personal intrest he and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln , had in the spirits. When their 11- year -old son willie died in 1862, his parents sought contact with him through mediums, After Lincoln's death , Mary Todd sat for William Mumler, one of the more respectable spirit photographers. He produced a remarkable portrait in which the ghostly image of LIncoln looks down on his Window.
