Sometimes talking to a computer tech for three or four hours while they clear your laptop of a nasty virus pays off. Occasionally you learn a little about their culture and lifestyle. And every once in a while a paranormal investigator receives a tip or two about haunted locations in a faraway land. Recently a computer tech in Mumbai—we’ll just call him “Peggy”—pointed out that India has ghosts and its fair share of haunting , too!
The five most haunted places in Mumbai, India are:
Grand Paradi Towers is the most famous haunted house in Mumbai. It is located in one of the city’s most affluent neighborhoods. The eighth floor of the Grand Paradi Towers in Kemps Corner is the site of several freakish suicides or a gruesome pattern of deaths and accidents. An elderly couple leaped out of their apartment window in 2004. Their children and grandchild followed suit within the next year. There have been at least twenty cases of fatal accidents and suicides since the building was construction in 1976. Many of these accidents have involved children, and once a maid jumped or fell out of one of the windows. The family who owned the building began to believe paranormal forces were at work. They decided to do a puja and a havan and ever since then the activity stopped—but the apartment remains unoccupied.
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is located on the northern edge of Mumbai. This large protected park is a place where people visit to spot wildlife. It is rumored that visitors have witnessed a phantom hitchhiker that asks those who pass by for a ride. Even the forest rangers insist this is true!
The Mukesh Mills were closed down in 1980. This enormous abandoned mill in Colaba has been a film location for several films and commercials. The rundown buildings of Mukesh Mills is the ideal set for horror and Gothic shows—especially because the Mills are considered to be haunted. Many directors, actors, producers and film crews refuse to work on the grounds after dark. One young actress suddenly began speaking in a deep masculine voice as if she was possessed, telling the crew to leave the premises immediately. Other film crews believe the place is jinxed and visitors seem to always lose their wallets and cell phones.
The Aarey Milk Colony was established in 1949. It is a huge area in Goregaon East and known for its long stretches of gardens, nurseries and lakes. Picnickers love to visit this milking estate on the weekend. Members of the film industry use the locations for shoots. Aarey Milk Colony is famous for apparitions and hauntings. Just like Mukesh Mills, many folks in the film industry refuse to work on the grounds after dark.
The Tower of Silence is actually a Parsi cemetery on Malabar Hill in Couth Mumbai. The local custom states that Parsi’s must leave the bodies of their dead for vultures to feed on. The images that come to mind are indeed horrifying. There is a winding road that leads down the hill to the cemetery is very desolate and spooky at night and the place is known to be a sort of ghoulish hangout. The weird events at the Grand Parrari Towers were blamed on spectral forces originating from this cemetery.
By the way, the winding road from the Tower of Silence offers one of the best views of the city of Mumbai. Take a drive up to the Tower and see for your self—if you dare!!
